![]() Revolutions, seances and royalty are not things that Phoenix Wright has experience with, but it’s fun to see how he reacts to them. Things tie in nicely with each case, with the exception of case four, which feels more like a filler case, even if it does have some fun moments and surprising turns. Most of the cases set in the country do revolve around conflicts or clashing ideas of the ruling royal family and the rebels, but the two tie in more than you might think.Īs you advance through each case, more and more about the overall plot is revealed, and as the pieces really start to fall together it becomes a fascinating story. Unrest has grown with the current legal system in Khura’in and a group called the Defiant Dragons have started a revolution. In usual Ace Attorney fashion the five cases of the game are mostly self contained, but they do also tie into a larger story, and boy is it an interesting one. Things are wrong in Khura’in, and its up to Phoenix Wright to defy the odds and set things straight. This fact immediately sets the tone of how the five cases in Spirit of Justice play out, with the odds stacked against our protagonists more than ever before, and their own lives literally on the line. Alhbi also hasn’t been given an attorney for defense, as there are no remaining attorneys in the country, only the prosecution is present during trials.Ī law called the Defense Culpability Act has made it so that if a client is convicted guilty, the defending attorney is then convicted of the same crime, which usually results in lifelong imprisonment or death. Court proceedings are very different in the Kingdom of Khura’in however, as something called the Divination Seance allows the royal priestess to see the last moments of a victim. Our protagonist rushes to the courtroom to see the proceedings and finds the boy accused and sentence right off the bat, which is where the attorney steps in to defend him. Setting a portion of the game in such a vastly different place was a risky choice, but it pays off handsomely in those regards. No sooner has Phoenix set foot in the country, then the young boy Maya set up as his tour guide Ahlbi Ur’Gaid, pun intended, is accused of murder. There is also some intensity thrown in here as well, as any court case in that country puts the defense attorney on the line as well, as they get the same punishment as the defendant if found guilty. In the land of Khura’in, no defense lawyer has won a case in 23 years, with the seances proving every person guilty in their court system. While the very religious and almost cult like residents of Khura’in are present in different parts of the game, the truly magical side comes during these seances that are done by the royal priestess Rayfa. These are as good as ever in Spirit of Justice, with the use of the two screens still continuing to be very effective, especially during trial sessions where you will be going back and forth between witness testimonies and evidence.Ī new wrinkle introduced in the game however is what are known as the divination seances, which bring in the spiritual side that gives the game its title. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice includes the usual courtroom moments where the key is to find contradiction in the witness’ statement, along with the investigation segments where you will go around and talk to various characters and inspect crime scenes and elsewhere. The game starts off with Phoenix Wright on “vacation” in the country of Khura’in, where trials have been decided by seances for over 20 years, but then shifts back to the Wright Anywhere Agency where the focus is on Apollo Justice, Athena Cykes, and Trucy Wright. While the main framework may be the same, this game does something quite different within the different episodes themselves.ĭiffering from past entries in the series that were mostly set in the same general area, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice tries something rather different by splitting up the story before eventually having them converge. The main game has five episodes for you to play through, and just like with Dual Destinies, there is also an extra DLC episode to come in the future as well. The structure of the Ace Attorney series has remained essentially the same over the years, with the game’s story being split over five separate episodes that each involve their own case, which is exactly how Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is set up as well.
